Garden Assessments

Not every garden needs redesign. Some simply need a clear, expert assessment before deciding what to do next.

A Garden Assessment is an *on-site, professional evaluation of your existing garden. It identifies what is working well, what may be limiting performance, where risks lie, and how to prioritise investment before moving into design or build stages.

Who This Is For

  • Moved to a new property and want to understand the garden you are inheriting.

    • Living with a garden that no longer functions as intended
    • Managing an inherited or neglected garden
    • Concerned about levels, drainage, ageing hard landscaping, or underperforming planting

  • Uncertain whether a redesign is appropriate, an assessment is usually the correct first step.

What the Assessment may include

  • Consultation

  • Overall layout and spatial organisation
    • Levels, drainage and access
    • Condition and likely lifespan of hard landscaping
    • Planting performance and long-term suitability
    • Light, shade, and microclimate influences
    • Maintenance demand versus actual use
    • Short, medium and long-term risks

The emphasis is on practical judgement and clarity, not speculative ideas.

What You Receive

• A concise written report
• Annotated site photographs
• Prioritised recommendations
• Indicative cost ranges where relevant
• An independent, experience-based overview

This report is intended to be useful whether you choose to proceed with further work or not.

What This Service Is Not

• Design drawings or planting plans
• Construction detailing
• Contractor quotations
• Styling or trend-led proposals

Those services remain available as subsequent options.

Fees

Garden Assessment are a paid professional advisory service.

Typical fee range: £360–£1,200, depending on garden size and complexity.
Fees are agreed in advance.
Site visit and report preparation are included.

In some cases, the assessment fee may be partially offset against later design work as there maybe some commonality with the consultation, site analysis and design brief.

Next Step

If a Garden Appraisal is appropriate, please get in touch with a brief description of the property and your concerns.

I will confirm suitability, scope and fee before arranging a visit.

*Generally this service would be conducted in person on site at the property at any location within 25 miles of Farnham, further distances can be considered on request and even nationwide/remotely in some cases.
